The Smiddy

Berneray is a small island famed for its spectacular beaches and colourful machair, with plenty to offer wildlife enthusiasts, walkers, canoeists or those simply in search of peace and quiet.

The former smiddy (blacksmith’s workshop) at Burnside Croft has been renovated to an extremely high standard, incorporating energy-saving technologies, and will provide a relaxing hideaway for up to two people, with stunning views across the machair.

The Smiddy’s combination of remoteness and comfort promises a unique get-away-from-it-all experience.

The accommodation comprises an open-plan living/kitchen/dining area with large window affording uninterrupted, panoramic views of the machair and sunsets beyond. A gas-fired stove and underfloor heating will keep you warm during your stay. A music system and television are provided for indoor entertainment.

The bedroom area is furnished with a superking bed which can also form twin beds, as required. The bathroom contains a jacuzzi bath, perfect for relaxing in after days out exploring. The kitchen is fully equipped with electric oven, microwave and fridge.

The Smiddy also contains a wet room and utility area with washer/dryer and dishwasher. A small viewing room complete with telescope, allows closer views of the night sky and wildlife. For those wishing to keep in touch with the outside world, there is free Wi-Fi (fibre optic). A bike shed provides storage space, a small freezer and outdoor table, chairs and umbrella for those sunny days.

The accommodation is all on one level with category 2 (assisted) wheelchair access throughout.

During your stay at the Smiddy, explore the island on foot or by bicycle. Bike hire is available - please contact us for further information. Popular activities include birdwatching and other wildlife-spotting, kayaking, canoeing and windsurfing. Seals are very common on the rocky east coast, otters are sometimes spotted, and corncrakes and birds of prey are not uncommon.

The island is well served by a shop, tearoom, post office and information centre (the latter open in summer months only) and North Uist provides a number of restaurants and bars; several of these are based in Lochmaddy, 9 miles from Berneray.
