Scarista House

Sgarasta Bheag, Isle of Harris, Western Isles/Outer Hebrides HS3 3HX

Business Details

Scarista House is one of the most beautiful and remote places to stay in Britain, with lovely views of the Atlantic Ocean, heather-covered mountains and a three-mile long sandy beach.

Comfortable, elegant small hotel and restaurant in a remote location overlooking one of the most beautiful beaches on the south west coast of Harris.

There has been a tradition of hospitality at Scarista House for a couple of hundred years. In former times the minister who lived in this Georgian manse, now a Grade B listed building, would have played host to visitors to his church; now it is a comfortable small hotel where guests can enjoy traditional comfort in well-furnished guest rooms, open fires in the sitting rooms and natural, skilled cooking and good wines in the dining room. Dogs are welcome by arrangement.

Scarista House isn’t a grand, stately home but it is a warm and comfortable place to stay. There are three bedrooms in the main house and three suites (each with its own private little sitting room) in the adjacent Glebe House. All the rooms have sea views and bathrooms en-suite. We have tried to choose furniture and fabrics which reflect the period, and are sympathetic to, the original use of the house. A library and first floor drawing room, both with open fires, are also available to guests. There are no televisions or radios, but there is free Wi-Fi with (slightly weather dependent) broadband.

We have two elegantly furnished dining rooms. We serve a set menu, with no choice, but with notice we can provide for most dietary needs and we take particular care to cater for vegetarians. Breads, cakes, biscuits & ice cream are all made by us.

We aim for natural, skilled cooking of the ingredients most immediately available, especially the islands’ fish, shellfish, lamb, beef and game. We use organic, wild or home-produced ingredients as much as possible. Getting the sort of ingredients we like can sometimes be difficult (never mind expensive!) on Harris, but we are always trying to find the best that we can.

We are listed in the Michelin Guide; the Good Food Guide; the Good Hotel Guide; Alastair Sawday’s Special Places to Stay; and Scotland the Best. We are one of the The Times top 10 best places to eat by the sea in the UK.

Glebe Cottage
Our self-catering cottage has the same magnificent views as the house and forms part of the single storey Glebe House, which is just across the garden from Scarista House. It sleeps up to 7 and comprises:

  • 1 double, 1 twin with extra bed, 1 bunk room
  • Bathroom and separate shower room
  • Large kitchen/ dining and living area
  • Open fire
  • Dishwasher, washing machine, tumble drier, cooker, microwave, fridge, freezer
  • Linen, towels and fuel are included in the price

The most popular activities at Scarista are eating, drinking, lounging around and walking, all of which we cater for adequately, but there are lots of other things to do as well: visiting weavers, fishing, golf, painting, cycling, climbing, archaeology, surfing and diving.
